How to think like a strong player
Strong players have good habits and are very disciplined. When they play a game, every time their opponent makes a move, they ask the following questions:
What is the threat?
What are the consequences of their opponent’s last move?

A threat could be
Any threat against their king
Trying to get more material
Placing a piece on a strategic place

Consequences are normally of geometrical nature:
They might intend to open or control a file
They might intend to open or control a diagonal
They might leave something undefended
